The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) claims that “pain is always subjective”. Moreover, “each individual learns the application of pain through experiences related to the word.”
This means that a person’s idea of pain, or what constitutes pain, varies based on their previous experiences. Medically, doctors define pain by attempting to measure ‘objective’ symptoms. But accounts of suffering pain often encompass the notion of total pain, which includes the psychological, spiritual, interpersonal, financial and physical aspects. This further shows that what actually constitutes pain can be defined in many ways.
But regardless of each person’s subjective definition of the word, this list is filled with the most widely accepted worst pains a human can experience.
