The Mission Had An Insignia

3. The Mission Had An Insignia

The insignia of this mission chosen by Lovell showed Apollo with 3 horses pulling the chariot across the Moon, with the Earth being spotted in the distance. This was meant to signify that the space missions brought knowledge to people on earth. The motto of the mission was ‘Ex luna, Scientia’ which meant ‘From the moon, Knowledge’.

The motto itself was inspired by Lovell’s alma mater which was the Naval Academy, which had a motto similar to the one chosen for the Apollo 13 mission. The number of the mission was inscribed in Roman numerals.
