Swigert got lucky by getting to travel on the Odyssey in place of Ken Mattingly, but Ken did play a very important role in helping to bring the astronauts back to earth. He never got the measles and he flew as a Command Module Pilot for the Apollo 16, which makes him one of the less than 30 astronauts in the world to have actually made it to the moon.

Ken retired from NASA in 1985 and worked as Director in Grumman’s Space Station Support Division. He also worked with General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin and currently lives in Virginia.
