A fact that is often forgotten about the Aquarius was that it was designed to support only two people for a maximum of 45 hours. The astronauts were still very far from Earth and although the Aquarius was available as a backup, it also meant that 3 adults had to hold on in the Aquarius for 90 hours.

The team work that resulted was the reason why the astronauts were able to come back to the Earth safely. Carbon dioxide was removed and materials that were already onboard were used to create a working adaptor.
