12. Flies Play A Big Role In The Food Chain
When we told you that house flies like to lay their eggs on rotting garbage and animal corpses – we’re sure you must’ve been freaked out! But in nature, this behavior plays a very important role in maintaining balance.
When the housefly eggs hatch, their maggots end up feeding on the rotting carcass and decomposing food and release those crucial nutrients and organic material back into the soil in the process. Flies that carry out this function in the food chain are called carrion flies.
Without carrion flies and animals around, there will be no one to clean up the dead and decomposing animals and free up those nutrients for use.
