#9 Chameleons Can Camouflage Themselves By Changing Colour
Chameleons are known for their ability to change colours. However, their ability to change colour is mistaken for camouflaging themselves, thanks to the pop culture myths fed by TV shows and doctored videos.
While chameleons may not live up to the pop culture references boasted by entertainment media, the reasons behind their hue-changing abilities are far more impressive.
Chameleons are defenceless creatures because, unlike their dangerous reptile cousins, they aren’t blessed with poisonous skin or venomous fangs. And on top of that, they are hardly agile and cannot outrun predators.
Hence, adjusting the tone of their skin colour is the only way to ensure survival, and sometimes, to mark shoo away trespassers as chameleons are extremely territorial.
