When we see the word ‘banana,’ the first thing that comes to mind is not the individual letter B-A-N-A-N-A, instead, we see the delicious yellow fruit. Perhaps for a split second, we visualise the texture of banana along with its sweet taste, or maybe we can feel the snapping sound of breaking a single banana from the bunch in our ear.

This form of memory enhancement uses all of the senses: hearing, seeing, touching, taste, and smell. Next time you’re trying to memorise something, be mindful to construct a mental image in your head. This method helps the brain store the information easier as it touches on all of its senses.

You may have heard of visualization as a way to engrain positive habits into your life; research suggests this method is far more effective than we might think.
