We now know that active matter is composed of active particles that don’t stop moving, giving them the ability to exert motion and perform mechanical work all while using metabolic energy.
Furthermore, these particles consume energy from the environment they are in and can form self-organized structures. While the active matter is exerting energy, there are various patterns that this takes in.
There are circular motions, where the particles will follow in circular motions, and then there are swirling patterns that are typically found in different evolution stages. The most prominent feature of active matter is that they are self-organized, and the two patterns they use are typical and have been occurring for ages.
