19. Cocaine-Laced Wine
Who doesn’t like a glass of red wine at the end of the day? Well, in the 1860s some wines came with a dose of cocaine. Vin Mariani, a popular wine, managed to get a large fan following, and we are not surprised, for it was made with red grapes treated with cocaine containing coca leaves.
What’s even more astounding is the fact that it was recommended by 8000 doctors as a tonic to revitalize fatigued men, delicate women, and sickly children.
Vin Mariani was endorsed and enjoyed by several famous personalities such as Thomas Edison, Queen Victoria, the Czar of Russia, and Pope Leo XIII. This controversial drink contained about 6 mg of cocaine per fl oz of wine.
