7. Candle Making Was Powered By Whale Oil
Whales are excellent sources of oil. Out of the many species that exist, Sperm whale oil is the most prized.
Sperm whales have an extra cavity in their head where a waxy substance known as spermaceti is produced.
Oil from whales was used to make candles but the ones made from spermaceti were valued higher, even considered the best as the candles produced a bright clear flame without giving off a lot of smoke.
When more sustainable options, ones easier to extract oil from, captured the eye of the market, whale oil usage went down.
