28. The Atlantic Whales Almost Got Extinct
The results of whaling for the collective whale population have been catastrophic. During the 1960’s Atlantic whales were almost depleted with not one in sight for a very long time. Today the numbers have gone from tens of thousands to less than 4000 in number with many countries still pushing for commercial whaling.
Whaling not only affects the whales but also the marine ecosystem they are a part of.
Whales have gestation periods that range from 10-12 months which considering how many are killed per year means that they cannot cope with the decreasing number of their species.
