14. Margarine Was Once Made From Whales
Butter and margarine are breakfast staples in many homes often enjoyed with a side of toast in the mornings.
But there was a time when the now vegetarian margarine was once derived from whales. During the times around the First World War, the process of hydrogenation was discovered. This gave people the idea to convert oils and fats into semi-solids such as shortenings.
Whale oil was already used in various industries, with this invention the inspired idea to convert this oil into a semi-solid butter-like spreadable item, and margarine was born.
