Breathing Ozone Damages the Lungs
Ozone is a naturally occurring gas made of three oxygen atoms. Some ozone is good, such as the ozone in the atmosphere that shield’s the Earth from harmful UV rays from the sun. However, ground-level ozone is dangerous, and considered a pollutant.
Ground-level ozone forms when there’s a chemical reaction involving VOCs and oxides of nitrogen. A reaction can occur when vehicle or industrial pollutants are in the presence of sunlight.
Inhaling ozone can be incredibly harmful. It’s highly irritating to the lungs, creating a situation that is similar to a sunburn on the lung tissue. This can cause a range of respiratory problems and may also irritate conditions like asthma.
