Kufungisisa is a cultural syndrome reportedly experienced by the Shona people of Zimbabwe.
The Shona community uses the term Kufungisisa for “thinking too much” which is exactly what patients with this syndrome suffer from.
While the distress from overthinking is the main symptom, it also has overlapping symptoms with disorders of anxiety, depression, and panic attacks.
If the stress from relationship and work problems starts to overwhelm a person, they may develop this syndrome.
Since the syndrome tends to overlap with anxiety and depression, the treatment of these disorders can also treat Kufungisisa.
Otherwise, the thinking disorder by itself can also be address with cognitive behavioral therapy.
